Do we need hedges anymore?

Abstract

Are hedges just medieval cattle fences, as a farmer wrote in a recent letter to a newspaper, with no function in today's society? Or do they lie at the heart of the British countryside, its landscape, history and wildlife? There can be little doubt that hedges are dear to many of us, but is this just nostalgia, or do they still have important roles to play?
