Hedgerow Management: A Survey of Land Managers’ and Contractors’ Practices and Attitudes

Defra project BD2117

After a period of widespread hedgerow removal in the UK between the 1940s and 1970s, as a result of agricultural intensification, this is now a much less serious issue. The main concern is now the poor condition of many hedgerows, as a result of agricultural impacts (e.g. damage from grazing livestock), intensive hedge management or neglect. New research was undertaken to determine currenthedgerow management practices and the reasons that underlie decisions by farmers and contractors.
