Improving the Hedgerow Regulations report England’s hedgerows: don’t cut them out!

A new CPRE report calls for the current Hedgerow Regulations to be improved to give local authorities more powers to protect hedgerows that are valued in their local landscape and community.

Scottish National Hedge Laying Championships 2010

The Scottish National Hedge Laying Championships will be held on 9 October 2010 at Ferlongs Farm, Ancrum Scottish Borders. Everyone is welcome, either to take part or to come and watch, and enjoy the day out.

In February 2011 the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will hold an annual hedgelaying competition in the North Cumberland Style. The style requires a hedgebank or 'kest' to be built. Help is on hand to give advice.

The Soil Association's Organic Farm School project runs a number of seasonal hedge laying courses each year. Learn the art of hedge laying with a practical farmer on a working organic farm.

Local hedgerow surveys 2009/10 UK landscape with hedgerows


Money is available from Defra  to contribute towards the funding of local hedgerow surveys during 2009/10.  As in previous years upto £5000 of funding is available to any individual survey.  Defra sponsors hedgerow surveys in line with its responsilties as lead partner for the Hedgerow Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP).                                  

Defra are particularly looking to contribute funding to surveys which will assess progress against the stated targets at a local level (e.g. county, district, city or parish).  For further details contact John Stratton, Defra on 020 7238 6022.  The deadline for applications is Friday 27th March 2009.
